Established in 2002, Basic Black, LLC, is an engineering and manufacturing company that designs and builds custom life-saving bullet-resistant equipment for special forces soldiers and law enforcement officers.
John Perkins, its founder and CEO, says: “Basic Black is all about doing all we can to protect the men and women who protect us. Some of them do that in the towns and cities we live in, others do that in hostile places doing dangerous things that we can only guess at. We make it our mission to improve their chances of making it home.”
In order to build the best bullet-resistant products it can, in the tight time frames that are demanded, Basic Black has had to find talent that is located in various places around the world.
At the same time, given the sensitive nature of its work, it needs to be able to orchestrate this collaboration in a highly secure and reliable manner.
“Our team and partner network is located all over North America, with associates in the UK and other parts of the world, such as in the field in Afghanistan. Be it design, production, marketing, testing, or fulfillment, our talent pool is highly distributed simply because to get the best people in our highly niche industry, we've had to find them wherever they may be, and wherever they may be serving.
“At the same time, the security is a very big issue for many of the things that we manufacture, even internally with these particular people, from engineers all the way through to manufacturers and down to a simple welder.”

To achieve these goals, we have worked closely with Government agencies, SOCOM, Military, local sheriff’s departments, SWAT teams, police departments, drug interdiction units, school resource officers, and others we felt could contribute ideas to, or benefit from our product lines
About Our Founder
John Perkins
John brings 35+ years of engineering, research, development and design experience to the table. John had the privilege of spending a summer working on a research vessel with the Cousteau’s and his early career was spent consulting on projects with oil companies, foreign countries and owning the Southeastern Region EPA lab, Treasure Coast Engineering, Inc. John relocated to Gainesville FL 25 years ago after patenting a solution to remotely open large aviation hanger doors.
The founder of Basic Black, LLC. John’s focus over the years has been developing ballistic solutions and technologies for the special operations community (SOCOM), corrections and law enforcement agencies nationally through Basic Black, LLC. John quickly gained a reputation in the field and was recruited by the Office of Law Enforcement Technology Commercialization (OLETC) as one of their emerging technologists in 2004. John also had the privilege of attending the National Law Enforcement and Corrections Technology Center (NLETC) training with Mohawk Consulting. Basic Black, LLC attends the Annual Mock Prison Riots where John’s cutting edge ballistic solutions and technologies are tested in real life situations with outstanding results.
